The Birth of a Fashion Icon

Thierry Mugler, born on December 21, 1948, in Strasbourg, France, is a renowned costume designer and director. His work in film, including "Mutant Action" (1993) and "The Man Who Wasn't There" (1986), showcases his innovative approach to design. By 1975, Mugler had established his own label for women, later expanding into men's clothing.

Mugler's signature style, characterized by wide shoulders, shoulder pads, tiny waists, and solid colors, gained popularity among film noir enthusiasts. Interestingly, many were unaware that his designs drew inspiration from the world of insects.

Mugler's Defining Moments

The 1995 Anniversary Extravaganza

Mugler's 20th-anniversary show in 1995 was a spectacular event featuring 80 models, including actress Tippi Hendren, Jerry Hall, and supermodel Claudia Schiffer. The show broke conventions by featuring muscular men in sequined g-strings and combat boots alongside supermodels in power suits, copper lingerie, and Moulin Rouge-inspired outfits.

Evolution of Style

In 1996, Mugler opened the Paris spring/summer ready-to-wear shows with a collection that received mixed reactions. It featured giant eye-covering hats for a touch of humor, alongside classic black and white outfits, short black skirts, revealing body stockings, and see-through gowns.

The 1997 haute couture collection marked Mugler's foray into the world of insects as inspiration. It also introduced custom-made tailoring, creating ultra-curvy hourglass suits, seamed stockings, and stiletto heels. The collection showcased two distinct moods: sequined butterfly tapestries on Jerry Hall and avant-garde latex evening gowns.

The Cadwallader Era

In December 2017, Casey Cadwallader became the creative director of Mugler. With a background in architecture from Cornell University and experience at Narciso Rodriguez, Loewe, and Acne Studios, Cadwallader brings a unique perspective to the brand.

Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear

Cadwallader's Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear collection, inspired by "trajectory," blends Mugler's past and present. Key features include:

  • Modern interpretations of sexy, see-through gowns

  • Revealing bodysuits

  • Classic power suits with a contemporary twist

  • Introduction of denim, including two-tone jeans and jacket sets

The color palette includes Mugler's signature black, white, cornflower blue, ice blue, lime green, beige, cherry red, and various denim washes. Accessories feature mesh gloves and stockings in vibrant hues. The catwalk design utilized a spotlight-style walkway against a black background.

Resort 2021 Collection

The Resort collection shares similarities with the Spring line but introduces brighter colors:

  • Expanded palette: cobalt blue, bubble gum pink, salmon, orange, burgundy

  • Architectural set design reminiscent of a circular Connect 4 board

  • Creative staging with models posing with oversized props and unique lighting

Personal Reflection

These collections inspire me to experiment with colors, textures, and skin-revealing designs while maintaining a strong, structured silhouette. Standout pieces include:

  • Spring collection: Red stockings paired with a black broad-shouldered dress and red kitten heels

  • Spring collection: Denim set mixing light and dark washes

  • Resort collection: Signature black mesh bodysuit with nude heels

  • Resort collection: Black mini dress complemented by lime green stockings

Mugler's evolution from Thierry's insect-inspired designs to Cadwallader's architectural influences demonstrates the brand's commitment to innovation while honoring its legacy of bold, sexy, and sculpted fashion.
