Introduction: Defining the Multi-Hyphenate Fashion Journalist

The concept of a multi-hyphenate fashion journalist represents a modern approach to career building in the fashion industry. It involves maintaining a primary role as a journalist while simultaneously pursuing multiple side hustles or complementary careers. This dynamic career path may include:

  • Interviewing brands

  • Hosting or attending industry events

  • Writing articles

  • Attending press events and fashion shows

  • Content creation

  • Blogging

  • Influencer marketing

  • Social media management

  • Photography

This career style demands excellent time management skills and a entrepreneurial mindset, as professionals must balance various responsibilities and essentially become both the investor and the invested in their career trajectory.

Personal Connection and Aspirations

For me, this isn't just a topic of interest—it's my chosen career path. Since the age of 11, I've been drawn to the fashion world, dreaming of living out my own version of a Black "Carrie Bradshaw life." Recognizing my diverse talents within the fashion field, I've embraced the idea of versatility in my career.

Inspirations in the Field

I've found inspiration in successful women of color who have thrived in this multi-faceted approach to fashion journalism. Notable figures include:

Emma Gannon: Author of "The Multi-Hyphen Life," Gannon provides valuable insights into this lifestyle. She emphasizes that "a passion doesn't need to be your side hustle or lead to a paycheck" (Eldor, Forbes). Her book, while potentially dated in the future, offers timeless methodologies and ideologies that remain relevant, especially in light of the pandemic's impact on traditional work structures.

Elaine Welteroth: A pioneer who has mastered the art of pivoting, Welteroth transitioned from journalism to entertainment and TV personality.

She advises to "Use fear as fuel, and map out a fulfilling career path that's designed for you. This isn't just about job titles, it's about building a life on purpose—not on autopilot" (Brown, Essence).

The Changing Landscape of Fashion Journalism

The rise of social platforms like TikTok has offered unprecedented insights into the day-to-day lives of professionals in various fields. This transparency has highlighted a generational shift away from traditional journalistic styles epitomized by figures like Anna Wintour. However, the wisdom of such trailblazers remains invaluable.

Wintour advises, "I don't believe in micromanaging, empowering those working with and around you, have a great team around you, and you are never following so listen to your instinct" (MasterClass).

Primary Research: Peer Observation and Interview

To gain further insights, I conducted an observation of a peer from AAU's Fashion Styling major and an interview with Louisa Jornayvaz, a fellow journalist. Key takeaways include:

  • The importance of being a multi-hyphenate in today's media landscape

  • The shift towards modern fashion journalism practices

  • The value of becoming an expert in a specific area of the field

  • The power of manifestation and networking

  • The importance of setting boundaries and aligning with one's moral compass

  • The benefit of finding mentors and role models in the industry

  • Recognizing when to pivot in one's career

Reflections on the Project Process

This project has been a journey of discovery and growth. From the initial stages of topic selection to conducting primary and secondary research, each step has contributed to a deeper understanding of the multi-hyphenate fashion journalist career path. The process has honed my skills in research, writing, and analysis, preparing me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this dynamic field.

Conclusion and Future Aspirations

As I approach the completion of my MA in Fashion Journalism from Academy of Art University this spring, I hope this project showcases my wordplay, diverse perspectives, and unbiased approach—qualities that would be valuable assets to any magazine. The multi-hyphenate fashion journalist career path offers exciting possibilities for those willing to embrace its challenges and opportunities. By staying adaptable, continually learning, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose, aspiring professionals can carve out successful and fulfilling careers in this ever-evolving industry.
